Gigs that Were and that May Be
March 19 and 20, 2006 saw Bill performing children’s songs at the SemirAmis Hotel in downtown Cairo, 7 pm. These performances were part of a special Baby’s Week in Cairo, and Bill was performing in the space reserved for the Diwan Bookstore, a store in Zamalek that markets his CDs.
March 22, 2006, a Wednesday, at 8 pm, at Ewart Hall, the University of Cairo in Egypt:
Me and My Shadow: Bill Evenhouse and the Cairo Silhouette Band in Concert.
This concert was a blend of live and electronic music. The Cairo Silhouette Band is just that: four silhouettes, a drummer, a bass player, a guitarist, and a keyboardist. They were visually shadows, but they contributed digitally pre-recorded instrumental and vocal backup for 6 of the 12 songs in the show. Bill sang the lead for all 12 songs, and he employed a number of “real” instruments, including the 12-string guitar, the classic guitar, the steel-string acoustic guitar, the banjo, and the 13-string oud (an Egyptian short-necked lute). A DVD of the concert was made, though not for commercial purposes.
Bill concluded the March concerts with a performance on the morning of the 23rd at the Narmer School in Maadi.
After that he returned to teaching his courses at the University of Cairo. Summer holidays saw him in the USA visiting family. By the end of August, 2006 he will be back in Cairo, at AUC. News of new concerts will be forthcoming.
